Deadly day in the Mediterranean. At least 11 people died and dozens were missing in the sinking of two migrant boats off the Italian coast, the German NGO ResQship and the Italian coast guard said on Monday June 17. “Our team was able to evacuate 51 people, two of whom were unconscious – they had to be freed with an axe,” the NGO said in a message on X, announcing that it had found the bodies of ten other migrants in this boat. “The unconscious people are currently receiving medical treatment and awaiting urgent evacuation.”
The Italian coast guard announced that it had recovered 12 people from a sailboat adrift off the coast of Calabria. A passenger died during rescue operations.
The search continues with maritime and air resources from the coast guard and Frontex, continued a press release from the coast guard, without specifying the number of people presumed missing. According to the Ansa agency, around fifty passengers are missing.
At the same time, the NGO SOS Méditerranée announced that it had rescued 54 people on Monday morning, including 28 unaccompanied minors, aboard an inflatable boat in the Libyan search and rescue zone. They were treated aboard the ambulance ship Ocean Viking.
