100 people isolated for the night after a big landslide on a municipal road

A major landslide in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains occurred this Saturday, January 1, around 4 p.m., on the road leading to the hamlet of Bionnassay. Boulders and dirt about 30 meters high completely block the municipal road.

No casualties are to be deplored, but a hundred people, including holidaymakers, are stranded in the hamlet for the night. “They did not wish to be evacuated“, specifies the prefecture of Haute-Savoie.”There is no power cut. For the moment, the landslide has not stabilized, so the clearing operations cannot take place until tomorrow.

A around 40 people were unable to go back to their homes and were relocated by the town hall, in particular at the Mont-Blanc space in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. People who must leave or join the hamlet this Sunday will be escorted by the PGHM of Chamonix, by tram then on foot. “Those who cannot walk will be helicoptered“, specifies the prefecture. A reassessment of the landslide must be made this Sunday by experts.
