The director of criminal and penal prosecutions is calling for the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for a Gatineau man who sexually assaulted his stepdaughter for a decade.
“The Supreme Court sent us a clear message almost three years ago by telling us ‘increase the sentences’,” said Me Marie-Josée Genest, prosecutor at the director of criminal and penal prosecutions. “Stop being afraid to ask for the most.”
The victim was only 5 years old when the abuse began and continued until she was 15, while the perpetrator was much older. The events occurred between 1994 and 2006 at a frequency of two to three times per week.
The little girl had to comply with her attacker’s requests of a sexual nature to obtain permission, such as going to play in the park.
The attacker had previously been found guilty of sexual interference, sexual assault and sexual exploitation. According to the prosecution, a maximum sentence should be imposed.
The defense, however, wants a sentence of less than 5 years to be served at the Philippe-Pinel psychiatric institute.
