$1.5 billion short of funds for humanitarian aid this year, says UN

Humanitarian aid for Sudan is sorely underfunded. This is the alert launched on Tuesday, May 2, by the UN. According to the United Nations, the aid program for Sudan for this year is currently only 14% funded and aid agencies are short 1.5 billion dollars (1.37 billion euros) to make in the face of the humanitarian crisis aggravated by the ongoing fighting.

In addition, these clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), since mid-April, have forced more than 334,000 people to flee inside the country, indicated a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) during the regular UN briefing in Geneva. Another 100,000 have left Sudan to settle in other countries in the region.

Fierce fighting continued Tuesday in Sudan between the army and paramilitaries warring for power, ignoring a truce constantly violated. Violent clashes in Khartoum and other regions, particularly in Darfur (west), have left more than 500 dead and ten times more injured since the start of the crisis, according to largely underestimated reports.
