Agriculture: a territorial culture

Although having lost 6,400 farms in the last ten yearsBurgundy – Franche-Comté is nonetheless a region with a strong agricultural DNA: there are indeed 23,600 farms, representing 50,500 people in permanent employment. Burgundy Franche-Comté thus ranks 8th rank of regions in metropolitan France in terms of number of farms. However, agriculture today is not just about numbers. Agriculture, in 2022, is obviously also the realities of an activity in full (r)evolution – technical and sociological –, between water issues and adaptation to climate changeat the same time as new consum(c)tion behaviors..
The 21st century will be agricultural or it will not be. But in a very different mode of operation of what used to be our definition of agriculture.

Agriculture(s) ??????? ?????????????

Franche-Comté multiplies productions:

  • Vine : with 3 billion Euros in turnover, the vineyard of the greater region covers 34,000 hectares with 99% Protected Designation of Origin (AOP) in the Jura and the departments of the former Burgundy region . The Jura vineyard stretches over 80 km, while many territories (Haute-Saône, lower valley of the Loue, etc.) have returned to viticultural culture, once carried away by phylloxera.
  • Milk (mostly Montbéliarde cattle) with nearly 760 million Euros in turnover is mainly valued in the production of cheeses, a large volume of which comes from the Jura Massif.
  • field crops (wheat, barley, corn) meanwhile achieve 920 million Euros in turnover in the greater region, mainly concentrated in Haute-Saône on the scale of Franche-Comté
  • ubiquitous activities : beekeeping, market gardening, fruit, fish farming, farmhouse cheeses, salted meats, wild plants, meat (ovine, bovine, porcine, goat, poultry) or heliciculture today also make up the identity of a region which also takes on brewing accents.

Agricultural Franche-Comté is changingin its activities and ways of working, and our “Short Circuits”, every morning, 7:55 a.m.are here to testify! A file that says a lot about know-how and new agricultural approaches.

Franche-Comté rhymes with quality ✅?

Within these different productions, Burgundy-Franche-Comté has several quality sectors. Among these are the AOP wines and wines of excellencerecognized worldwide as Château-Chalon, yellow wine or straw wine.
Cheese PDOs are also present: Comté and Morbier (Jura and Doubs), Mont d’Or (Doubs) whose particularity is to be produced only between August 15 and March 15, Bleu de Gex (Jura), the only cheese in blue-veined appellation of the region.
Like its sectors of excellence, agriculture must create in all sectors more added value by developing production under the sign of quality such as beef production under protected Geographical Indication (PGI), production in organic farming (AB)… as well as the local marketing.

Institutions and training

Mamirolle, Poligny, Montmorot, Dannemarie-sur-Crête, Levier, and other CFPPA or MFR… for as many training establishments activities and professions – increasingly diversified – in agriculture. But do you know, for example, the Vesoul Agrocampus?

Vesoul Agrocampus: an establishment dedicated to agricultural equipment

Vesoul Agrocampus welcomes more than 300 learners each year on its agro-equipment pole (from CAP to license) in the three training paths (school, apprenticeship and continuing education). The establishment has quality facilities and welcomes learners to a technical hall of 3,200 m² divided into 8 specialized workshops (electricity, motors, transmissions, metalwork, hydraulics, landscaping equipment, robotics and diagnostics).
Partnership agreements set up with manufacturers allow trainees to take part in field trials of prototypes and the development of agricultural equipment.
Technical days are organized with manufacturers and dealers. The establishment has also developed a range of services that it carries out at dealerships and operators located near the EPL (transition of tractors to the engine power bench, control of sprayers, control of air conditioning, control of injectors, etc.) .
