Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning to his allies, including the United States, urging immediate action before North Korean forces undergoing training in Russia are deployed to the conflict in Ukraine.
He emphasized the necessity for authorization to employ Western long-range weaponry to target the training facilities in Russia housing these troops.
‘America is observing, Britain is observing, Germany is observing. There is a collective anticipation for the North Korean military to commence attacks against Ukrainians,’ Zelensky stated in a recent post on the Telegram messaging platform.
As reported by the Biden administration and Ukrainian military intelligence, North Korean soldiers are presently located in the Kursk region of Russia, close to the Ukrainian border. Thousands have received Russian equipment and weaponry and have been trained across five sites in Russia’s Far East.
The presence of North Korean troops is perceived by Western leaders as a serious escalation. This development could facilitate technology exchanges from Moscow to Pyongyang, potentially enhancing North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, thereby impacting relations in the Indo-Pacific region.
Concerns linger regarding the effectiveness of the inexperienced North Korean combatants.
Questions remain about the casualty figures these forces might incur and how many of North Korea’s elite soldiers Kim Jong Un is prepared to deploy into this severe conflict.
According to South Korea’s intelligence agency, an initial group of 1,500 fighters recently journeyed to Russia, outfitted with Russian military uniforms, weapons made in Russia, and counterfeit documentation classifying them as residents of Siberian territories. The agency indicated that additional troops are anticipated to arrive shortly.
U.S. officials have labeled these troops as ‘legitimate military targets,’ with U.S. envoy to the U.N., Robert Wood, asserting that if North Korean soldiers ‘enter Ukraine in support of Russia, they will surely return in body bags.’
In an interview aired on South Korean channel KBS, Zelensky noted that while North Korean soldiers have yet to engage in combat, he anticipates their involvement will occur ‘in days, not months.’
Discussing the implications of the North Korean troop deployment, Zelensky remarked: ‘Putin is gauging the West’s reaction… I believe that after observing these responses, Putin will decide to escalate troop numbers… The current reaction is negligible, it is virtually zero.’
Furthermore, Zelensky announced that Ukraine is ‘awaiting an official team from South Korea, as they have confirmed plans to send specialists to Ukraine’ and stressed the importance of ‘strong allies,’ warning that ‘confronting Russia and North Korea alone would be perilous.’
Additionally, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Ukrainian president addressed the forthcoming U.S. presidential election.
‘The next U.S. president could either bolster or diminish support for Ukraine. A reduction in this support would enable Russia to seize additional territory, hindering our chances of victory in this war,’ he explained. ‘This is the reality we face. Our position is not about territorial concessions but rather pursuing diplomatic avenues contingent on the U.S. reaffirming its commitment. A sincere intent from the United States to swiftly resolve this war is essential.’
